In 2008, one-year-old Maria Harris died in a hospital in Pinellas County, Florida. She had never been out of the care of her doting grandparents or mother during her short life until she was taken to a home daycare. On her first day there, she ended up unresponsive. CT scans revealed a recent traumatic brain injury.

This tragedy took four years to go to trial. The entire trial, hearings, and the events leading up to the ruling by the court are covered in detail. This case was overshadowed by the drama surrounding the Casey Anthony trial but it still received national media coverage.

The family of Maria Harris was well-known to the author.
